Asha's story anchors the 2013 edition of the Welfare of Stray Dogs' calendar. The theme of this year's calendar is hope meant for street dogs and the odd cat, who live at WSD kennels, be it for treatment, sterilisation or sheltering till adopted. WSD found Asha in a slum near Worli.
Her face was eaten away by maggots, leaving her with no discernible features. Even then, despite the agonising pain, she wagged her tail vigorously, as it to thank her rescuers. Asha responded to her treatment but the affected parts of her face grew skin without any hair.
She may not have won beauty contests but her personality shone through and she won many hearts. After a year at the WSD kennel, she was adopted by Vanessa, a WSD volunteer and dog behaviour expert. Asha's success was echoed in the tales of other dogs too.
Not all get adopted and that's why WSD endeavours to make their stay as comfortable as possible. The photographs in the calendar are by Rohan Mukerjee, Parizaad D, Anil Purohit, Abodh Aras and Daniela Cony.u00a0
