Flamingos have started arriving in Mumbai

Thousands of flamingos migrate to Mumbai in November-December and become city residents till May-June. December-January is usually considered the peak period to spot these majestic birds.

A majority of flamingos migrate from their breeding grounds in Gujarat and Rajasthan to Mumbai as winter sets in.

Mumbai becomes home for two species of flamingos - Lesser Flamingos (Phoenicopterus minor) and Greater Flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus).

Popular places to spot flamingos in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai include Thane Creel Flamingo Sanctuary, Sewri Mangrove Park, Bhandup Pumping Station and Tawale Wetlands.

In a city, adult flamingos have few natural predators, but chicks may be hunted by raptors, gulls and crows.
