The Mumbai Police on Sunday night arrested two people from Sewri and seized around 430 kg of adulterated tea powder from their possession.
According to the officials, Sewri police received information regarding the matter. While verifying the information the police learnt that adulteration of tea powder in huge quantities was being done, following which a raid was conducted in Ramgarh slum, Sewri. The police have arrested two people -- identified as Rahul Abuljahar Sheikh, 26, and Raju Abuljahar Sheikh, 29.
Further investigation into the matter revealed that the accused were involved in mixing colour with tea powder. Besides adulterated tea powder, the police officials have also recovered weighing scales, some files, cheque books and stamps. The material seized amounts to Rs 85,000.
When contacted, Manoj Saindre, senior police inspector, Sewri police station, confirmed the recovery and arrest in the case.

The Sewri police registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Food Safety Standards Act, 2006. The food safety officials are also doing a parallel probe into the matter. "The accused had been involved in the unlicensed sale, production, adulteration and stockpiling of tea powder. The recovered documents are being studied for further investigations," says the police official.
