A 33-year-old man wanted in connection with a 2011 murder case was apprehended by the police during an investigation into a theft in Palghar, Maharashtra.
On September 29, the police made a breakthrough by arresting Anuj Gangaram Chowgule, aged 33, in connection with a reported theft in Virar. The accused, it is alleged, had stolen a gold chain from a senior citizen in Virar on September 25, leaving local residents shocked and concerned, stated a PTI report.
Senior Inspector Pramod Badakh, leading the investigation for the Crime Unit-III Virar, said that the accused was involved in multiple serious criminal cases across Maharashtra.
He was quoted as saying, "During our rigorous interrogation of the accused, Anuj Gangaram Chowgule, we uncovered a startling revelation. He confessed to his involvement in more than 25 serious criminal cases across multiple locations, including Mumbai, Satara, Palghar, and even the neighboring state of Madhya Pradesh."

The accused's criminal activities encompassed a wide range of offences, including murder, dacoity, and various thefts. It was also revealed that Chowgule was a wanted fugitive in connection with a murder case registered at the Mahabaleshwar police station in Satara dating back to 2011.
For now, Anuj Gangaram Chowgule remains in custody, awaiting his day in court, while law enforcement authorities' piece together the details of his extensive criminal history.
Meanwhile, two persons were recently arrested for allegedly robbing a rickshaw driver at knife point and trying to take away his vehicle in Mumbai's Mankhurd area. The incident happened on Saturday evening when the driver was going to Shil Phata with three passengers, said a police official.
The police official told PTI, "The three asked him to stop at a secluded place and at knife point took his money and also tried to take away his vehicle. Two patrolling policemen saw the incident and managed to arrest one of them."
He added that the second accused was arrested from Mumbra and that they have launched a manhunt for the third accused involved. He added that the driver was injured in the melee and he was taken to a nearby hospital by the constables.
