There seems to be a difference of opinion over how to catch vehicles speeding on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL).

While the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has installed CCTVs on the sea link to capture images of speeding vehicles, traffic police officials believe the cameras are too high to be of much help.

Watchful: Traffic police are buying speed guns that can not only detect the speed of the offending vehicle on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, but also capture the image of its number plate.

According to an MSRDC official, "CCTV cameras at BWSL will capture and transmit the number plates of offending vehicles to the exit point where these motorists will be penalised."

However, an official from the traffic police said, "CCTV grabs will not help in getting number plate details. We will post traffic police officers at both the exit points and in between with speed guns.

We can then send the details to our counterparts at the other end of the bridge who will stop the vehicle."

WHO'LL MAN BWSL?

The 5.6-km cable-stayed bridge, which originally fell under the jurisdiction of six police stations, will now be overseen only by Bandra and Worli police stations.

Said Prakash George, senior inspector, Bandra police station, "Our jurisdiction will begin at the toll naka in Bandra and extend till the 19th pillar. Sixty pillars support the entire bridge.

The area from the 19th pillar towards Worli, up to Khan Abdul Gafar Khan Junction will be under the jurisdiction of the Worli police station."

Patrolling the waters around the sea link will be the duty of officials from Versova Sagri coastal police station, who are currently operating from Yellow Gate (port) police station.
