Lakhs of anxious faces had their eyes on railway tracks and ears glued to the loudspeakers at Kalyan station yesterday. People stood on the edge of the platform and waited for train services to resume after the Kopri water pipeline bridge collapsed on a Kalyan-bound train near Thane station at 10.35 am yesterday.
While those living nearby decided to head back home, others wiped the sweat from their brow amid the confusion over resumption of train services. "I am heading for Bhopal, but don't know what to do," said a harrowed commuter.
Some desperate ones walked on the tracks while those who had taken a train to Thane earlier had to return, as trains weren't moving beyond Kalwa. "I had to pay more than Rs 70 to return to Kalyan by road," said Vivek.
After 1 pm, passengers could take the Thane-Vashi route to reach CST. "I usually leave from office after 8 pm, but yesterday, I left at 5 pm," said A Pawar.
