The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation ( BMC) commissioner now wants to rate road contractors. The BMC will display the names of the contractors at the beginning and end of road works and the engineers will have to rate them on the basis of progress of the work. The administration plans to do it only after the new tenders for road works are issued and the fresh contracts will likely have a rating clause mentioned as well, revealed sources.
After he asked that the 50- odd road tender packages worth over Rs 500 crore be scrapped, Praveen Pardeshi held a meeting a week ago, in which there were discussions over new conditions that should be included in the tenders. He also mentioned the need to rate the contractors and to encourage their work. There was also a suggestion to ask citizens to rate the work in progress, on public forums.
However, this is yet to be decided, revealed sources.
BMC officials are also mulling on giving the new road works on design, built and transfer ( DBT) basis. In this system, the maintenance of the roads will also depend on the contractors for 10 years instead of the current 3 and 5 years.
However, the concerns of increase in the project cost were also put forth, and thus the decision on the new tenders still remains pending.
