Scores of young bikers raced along Marine Drive at break-neck speeds of 120-150 kmph all through last night, while the cops watched as mute spectators.

While for some riders it was a joyride, one biker was not as fortunate. The rider rammed headlong into a taxi, waiting to take a turn, causing severe damage to the vehicle and sustaining serious injuries in the bargain.

The rider was rushed to a nearby hospital; however, the incident did not prove an eye-opener for the cops.

Despite the accident, the bikers continued racing around the stretch.

When contacted, an officer from the Marine Drive police said "we will register a case against the biker," and immediately sent a policeman to the accident spot to conduct a panchnama.

Regular menace

The taxi drivers, who were sitting nearby, said, "The taxi driver was taking a right turn, when the two bikes zoomed in.

One of the riders managed to control the bike, while the other rammed in to the taxi. The taxi driver was not at fault."

Another cab driver added that the racing bikers have made life miserable for motorists on that stretch during the night.u00a0 "The cops should take strict action," added another taxi driver.

The Other Side

When this reporter informed the Marine Drive police station of the incident and the continuing drag race, the cops pleaded their helplessness.

The police officer said, "We had asked for bandobast, but we have a shortage of staff.

Also, the traffic police must have taken proper precaution by installing a speedometer. There are hundreds of boys and it's difficult for us to handle them."
