The ongoing economic slowdown has threatened to leave many people unemployed, as companies opt for optimisation of resources and reduction in expenditure.

But the Railways has done exactly the opposite. It has hired 17 family members of those who died in the terror attacks at CST on November 26, 2008.u00a0

Srinivas Mudgerikar, chief PRO, Central Railway, said, "We received applications from families of 21 victims at CST. The general manager has sanctioned the applications of 17 families who have been employed in Group D (see box)."

He added, "The families of all the deceased were personally contacted and requested to send an application in favour of a legal heir or a dependent for a job in the Railways.

We will stick to our promise of offering jobs to the families of the 26/11 victims at CST." Mudgerikar stated that among the 21 applications, three family members are minors and will be considered when they become adults.

The Railways has appointed seven people in the Mumbai division and the remaining 10 for Eastern Central Railway, North Eastern Railway, Western Railway, Southern Railway and Bhusawal divisions. All the 17 people will start work in a fortnight after undergoing a medical examination at the Byculla Railway Hospital.

Chosen ones

Ramzan Shariff (22), a commerce graduate, is among the lucky people to have been hired. Ramzan and his grandfather Ebrahim Rehamatullah were at CST when the terrorists struck.

One of the two bullets that hit Ramzan during the attacks is still inside his chest. He's glad to get a job in these difficult times. "I was working with a call centre, but had quit my job recently.

I was hunting for another job when I got a call from the Railways with an employment offer. I am very happy and will try to move to a higher position," said Ramzan.

The other six people to get a posting in the Mumbai division are Bharat Navadia (husband of Poonam Navadia), Chandrashekhar B Jadhav (brother of Mukesh Jadhav), Savitri Gupta (widow of Vinod Gupta), Ganesh Sakhare (son of Sitaram Sakhare), Ali Hussain Ajhar Mullah (brother of Nurool Islam Ajhar Mullah) and Mukesh Gupta (son of Bechan Gupta).

Out of the 52 people who died in the mayhem at CST on 26/11, six were Railway employees. The procedure to hire someone from their families is different and will take place in due course of time.
