Congress president Sonia Gandhi underwent a successfully surgery in the US on Thursday. No party leader, however, is ready to disclose her medical condition.

A media organisation, on its social networking page, tweeted, "Sonia Gandhi in NY for an urgent surgery for an undisclosed "medical condition", admitted to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center".

Most leaders declined to go into the details and remained tight-lipped. "Most of us do not know what has happened.

If her health bulletin needs to be shared with the countrymen, our leaders will definitely do it," said a senior leader requesting anonymity.

When asked about the nature of the surgery, Congress MP and spokesperson Manish Tewari said, "Media should maintain sensitivity in issues like these."

Earlier in the day at the Parliament house premises, Congress general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi said 64-year-old Gandhi was recently diagnosed with a medical condition and has been advised surgery.

"Gandhi has travelled abroad on the advice of her doctors. She is likely to be away for two to three weeks,"
said Dwivedi. He also confirmed that the surgery was successful.

Before leaving for the US, Gandhi expressed a desire that in her absence, a group comprising Rahul Gandhi and senior leaders A K Antony, Ahmed Patel and Janardhan Dwivedi look after party affairs.
