After spending crores on resurfacing it, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now invited tenders for the reconstruction of Parel TT flyover. As per the plan, the civic body will reduce the number of expansion joints to three from 44, which means motorists will enjoy a smooth ride on the new bridge. Parel TT flyover on Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar road was constructed 40 years ago. As the bridge is old, the expansion joints have become uneven, slowing down traffic and causing jerks to vehicles.
"BMC invited tenders for the reconstruction of the bridge," Satish Thosar, chief engineer of the Bridge Department said. "The estimated cost of the project is Rs 16.96 crore. The bridge will take nine months to construct, excluding the monsoon months," Thosar added. "For the past five-six years, BMC spent crores on resurfacing the bridge. But as the bridge is old, only resurfacing is not the solution," an official said.
The bridge is 300 metres long. BMC will construct a ramp on both sides. A 60-metre section in the middle of the bridge will be kept open for vehicular traffic. If need be, BMC will construct a pillar in the middle, the official said. "Bridge reconstruction is the final solution and BMC has decided to reconstruct the bridge with new technology," he added. "The BMC's Encroachment and Removal Department godown and two public toilets, which are under the bridge, will be removed," another official said.

At Parel, the Hindmata area is a major flooding point during monsoon every years. The civic body had constructed a connector between the Hindmata flyover and the Parel TT bridge and had spent Rs 11 crore on it. The construction of the bridge will take nine months. During this period, commuters are likely to face major traffic snarls as Dr Ambedkar Road is one of the busiest roads in Mumbai.
