Raj Thackeray paid tribute to Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti martyrs on Maharashtra Day during his visit to Hutatma Chowk.

Thackeray was accompanied by his son Amit and BJP candidate for Mumbai North Central seat advocate Ujjwal Nikam who has fought the 26/11 case. 

Hutatma Chowk, formerly known as Flora Fountain, it was renamed in memory of the martyrs who lost their lives during a peaceful demonstration in 1956.

The square was renamed in honour of the members of the Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti who were tragically killed by police gunfire during their protest, becoming a symbol of their sacrifice for the creation of the State of Maharashtra.

May 1 marks Maharashtra Day, commemorating the state's formation in 1960 following linguistic reorganisation, with Mumbai as its capital.

Maharashtra was formed on May 1, 1960, through the States Reorganization Act, merging Marathi-speaking regions within Bombay State.

Maharashtra Day is celebrated with cultural events, parades, and flag-hoisting ceremonies, showcasing the state's rich heritage and traditions.
