There has been a drop in the city's accident rate in 2008.

Traffic police said it was down by 10 per cent compared to the previous year.


The accidents had come down from 957 in 2007 to 864 in 2008.

The police said this reduction was despite two new areas Devanahalli and Chikkajala being added to the city jurisdiction. They said, of the 864 accidents, 50 accidents took place in these new limits.

"New areas like Bellary Road to International Airport which recorded abnormal number of fatal accidents immediately after the airport opened, was also under control now," said Shankar M Bidari, city police commissioner. It was because ofu00a0u00a0 continuous and focused enforcement through deployment of interceptors, he said.

The year 2008 recorded 36 per cent increase in enforcement cases and 43 percent increase in fine collection.

While 19 lakh cases of traffic violations were booked in 2008, it was 13.9 lakh in 2007. A record Rs 27.5 crore was collected as traffic fines as against Rs 19.3 crore in 2007.

"The city police will soon receive five more interceptors. Strict action will be taken against those who don't pay their fines promptly or do not appear in the court pursuant to a police notice," he said.
