Rs 50,000 in cash and jewellery missing from the houseA visually impaired couple was smothered to death allegedly by their new tenants who made off with Rs 50,000 cash and jewellery. Police said that the deceased, Rajender Verma (52) and his wife Sudha (50), were discovered murdered Wednesday morning.

The victims' daughter Hema told the police that her father had withdrawn Rs 50,000 from the bank on Tuesday, which was missing from the house. She said that only she knew about the withdrawal.
"Hema called them at around 5 am. When nobody responded, she grew suspicious. She then called up Verma's neighbour Amit Rana who discovered the bodies when he went to check on the Vermas. Amit told Hema what he had seen and thenu00a0 the cops were informed," said a senior police officer.
Police said both the tenants were missing and they could be involved in the incident. "They (tenants) have been living in the house since last week. One of them has been identified as Ashwini, an employee of a Noida-based call centre. Their police verification was not done. The victims lived on the ground floor while the suspects on the second floor," the official said.
Neighbours told the police they saw Ashwini smoking on the balcony at around one am after which he had disappeared.
The couple is survived by three daughters Hema, Anjali and Lalita, who are also visually impaired. Police said they have registered an FIR of murder and a manhunt is on to nab the culprits.
THE VICTIMSRajinder Verma (55), had taken voluntary retirement as clerk from the Kalakriti department of the Jawaharlal Nehru University about five years back, while his wife Shobha (50) was a housewife.
