Proving once again Delhi's roads are unsafe, five members of a family, including an elderly couple, were injured after the car they were traveling in smashed into a road divider in the Paschim Vihar area of West district on Sunday night. According to the police, the accident occurred at around 10 pm near the Peeragarhi traffic signal.



According to the police, the Daewoo Matiz car was being driven by one Navin, 38. Navin was returning to his Paschim Vihar residence with his wife Veena, 32, son Vineet, mother Sangeeta, 68, and father Bindeshwar, 74, when the accident occurred.u00a0

"Navin lost control over the car and it rammed into the road divider. They were taken to a nearby hospital where Navin and his wife are still recuperating, while the others were discharged after first-aid," said a police official.

In another accident, a 40-year-old truck driver was killed while his cleaner was injured when their truck turned turtle on GT Road in the Alipur area of Outer district on Sunday night.

According to the police, the incident occurred at around 10 pm on the GT Karnal Road when the deceased, identified as Satendra,u00a0 was driving the truck towards Delhi from Panipat in Haryana.

"Just before the truck was about to climb a flyover, the driver lost control over the vehicle and it overturned.

While the driver died on the spot, the cleaner, who hasn't been identified yet, escaped. He hasn't been located.

We are trying to find the cleaner and have confiscated the truck," said a police official.

Cops say city is safe

According to the Delhi police, as compared to 8,108 accidents in 2008, 6,752 accidents were reported last year, marking a decrease of 17 per cent. However, the number of fatal accidents increased from 1,927 in 2008 to 2,165 last year.

Cops said cases of drunken driving, dangerous driving and over speeding went up in 2009.

In 2008, the number of tickets issued for drunken driving, dangerous driving and over speeding were 7,579, 132,467 and 183,544 respectively.
For 2009, the figures were 12,109 (60 per cent increase), 236,671 (79 per cent increase) and 212,287 (16 per cent increase) respectively.
