A Scientist at the city-based National Centre for Cell Science (NCCS) and his wife, who are residents of Bavdhan, were arrested on charges of possessing assets worth Rs 81 lakh, which were disproportionate to their known sources of income. Dr G C Mishra, director of NCCS, gave the sanction order to prosecute Samar Roy Chowdhary (53) on May 18 this year.

The officials from the anti-corruption department of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took Chowdhary and his wife Chaitali (44) into custody on Monday in Bavdhan. Chowdhary had joined NCCS in March 1994 and was working as store and purchase officer. He was promoted in 2001. Investigations and assessment of Chowdhary's moveable and immovable assets by the CBI revealed that he had amassed the assets between 1994 and 2010.

They were produced before the court of Special Judge (CBI) S V Lathkar who granted them bail on a personal bond of Rs 30,000 each with two surety of like amount, on the condition that they will not tamper with evidence or leave court's jurisdiction.

CBI Inspector Swati Desai said: "A case of disproportionate assets (DA) was filed on January 15 after which Chowdhary's residence was also searched." As per the complaint, Chowdhary allegedly indulged in corrupt practices between January 2001 and February 2010. "Chaitali runs three firms, including a fashion designing firm, and her business was taken into consideration for calculating the worth of the assets," Desai said.

CBI's Public Prosecutor Vivek Saxena said the CBI has considered all income including honorariums received by Chowdhary from various lectures. Chowdhary's gross income between 1994 and 2010 was Rs 35 lakh but they own a bungalow worth Rs 47.9 lakh in Baner. CBI estimated Chowdhary's DA to be worth Rs 17.78 lakh and Chaitali's to be Rs 63.22 lakh.
