MCD proposes to extend rent-a-cycle schemeSo what if you could not wake up early and missed your morning walk. You can still catch up on your fitness regime by pedalling a bicycle on the way to the nearest Metro station while going to office.
Trail blazers: Delhi has an active cycling clubThe Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has now proposed to extend the pilot project it had started a few weeks ago in Rohini. The civic body had engaged a private operator who provides bicycles to people for reaching Metro stations.
MCD Standing Committee on Wednesday cleared the proposal in which four more places have been identified for setting up cycle stands in Rohini area.
Officials say if the plan goes successful, the idea would be replicated across the city.u00a0 "Many people drive four-wheelers or two-wheelers to the Metro stations but it creates chaos at the parking lots. Also, many people do not take Metro just because Metro stations are too far from their houses and availability of local transport is a problem," an official said, adding that it would reduce congestion and also the parking problem.
"If the project is successful, it may be extended to more areas and extended further in the second phase with provision of battery-operated cycles," said Amiya Chandra, chief of MCD Remunerative Project Cell.
A private firm, Delhi Cycles Pvt Ltd, has already been given a space in Rohini East Metro station by the Delhi Metro.
According to the pilot project, MCD will offer 25'X10' space at four placesu00a0-- Patel Apartment Chowk, G S Apartment Sector-13, near M2K Sector 3 and Commercial Complex Sector 8u00a0-- for the cycle sub-stations for the next six months, which will cater to nearest Metro stations.
The company will charge for a ride Rs 3 for half an hour out of which it proposes to give 50 paisa to MCD.
In a computerised system, all the trips will be automatically calculated and a report will be submitted to MCD on monthly basis. A unique cycle frame design will be used to prevent thefts of the vehicles.

The MCD on Wednesday ordered an inquiry into waterlogging and leakage in its Rs 700 -crore new headquarters building -- Civic Centre. The Standing Committee meeting saw a ruckus over the issue with opposition Congress councillors shouting slogans and demanding a CBI probe into the matter. Interestingly, the Civic Centre was unveiled with great pomp three months back. However, several parts of the 28-storeyed, 112-metre Civic Centre still remain incomplete and the civic body may take months to shift to the building. "It seems that water had leaked through the expansion joints (the gap between floor decks for withholding weather or seismic impact), the work on sealing of which is still to be done in some places. The waterlogging at basement was probably because the pumps did not work," said, MCD Commissioner, KS Mehra. Opposition had demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter alleging substandard work done by the MCD in the project. |
