Thirty-Five kg of silver was stolen from the Vimalnath Swami Jain Shwetamber Mandir in Bibvewadi in spite of the Bibvewadi police chowkie being opposite the temple.
Locals said that in spite of the Bibvewadi police chowkie being opposite the temple, the thieves were bold enough to sneak into the temple and make away with five idols and one silver throne in the dark of the night. The silver stolen weighed 35 kg and was valued at close to Rs 12 lakh.
Prakash Shah, the complainant and temple trustee, suspected the thieves entered the premises by jumping over the compound wall from the adjoining Mahesh Society when watchman Maruti Gaikwad dozed off. "We were there on the temple premises till 1.30 am on Saturday and then we dispersed," Shah said.
API S N Khot, who is investigating the case, said, "Thieves broke into the temple from the side door, avoiding the front door. They broke the lock, but Gaikwad says he was sleeping."
