Police personnel including a sub inspector (SI) were suspended and three others sent to district lines (as punishment) after they allegedly thrashed four youths for riding bikes without wearing helmets in Ambedkar Nagar area of southeast Delhi. The victims were identified as Ravi, Ankur, Deepu and Mukesh, residents of Sangam Vihar. They were returning to their homes from Chirag Dilli area after visiting their friends when the incident took place.
The beating
The youths were intercepted by police personnel in Ambedkar Nagar area. All four got scared as they were not wearing helmets and tried to flee from the spot. But the police personnel caught Ravi while the other three fled. But they returned after few minutes to apologise to the cops. There was an altercation. The policemen then thrashed the bikers for not wearing helmets. All four suffered severe injuries and fell on ground, writhing in pain.
Meanwhile, Rakesh Kumar, uncle of Ravi alleged that the cops took the victims to the police station and thrashed them again. "A police official came to my house after which I got to know about the incident. He took me to the police station. When I reached there I found that all the police personnel who were on duty were totally drunk. My nephew Ravi and his three friends were badly injured," alleged Rakesh.
He added that Ravi and his friends were taken to AIIMS trauma centre. "Ravi has severe injuries in his head. His hand is fractured and his condition is stated to be critical by doctors," said Rakesh.u00a0u00a0u00a0
The protest
The victim's family members staged a protest in front of Ambedkar Nagar Police Station and shouted slogans against the cops. They complained to assistant commissioner of police of the area against the SHO Ambedkar Nagar and four cops. After looking into the incident, the ACP sent all four police personnel to district line as a punishment.
While speaking to MiD DAY, Ajay Chaudhary, additional commissioner of police confirmed the incident. "We suspended three police personnel including an SI and the others were sent to district lines after the family members alleged that all police officials were drunk while this incident took place," he said.u00a0
