In choppy trade, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex on Friday tested the 10,000 level before ending at 9,958.22 with a gain of nearly 55 points over the previous close.
The Sensex, which commenced the day higher, spurted midway to 10,070.28, a level last seen on December 18, before falling back to close at 9,958.22, a gain of 54.76 points over.
It touched the day's low of 9,863.86 on profit-selling by funds.
Similarly, the broader-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty rose by 13.30 points at 3,046.75, after touching the day's high of 3,079.85 and a low of 3,021.80 points.

Brokers said market conviction was still low, which means there would be strong resistance to the Sensex attaining higher levels.
"(The) market is still under pressure on fears (of low) corporate earnings by blue-chip companies and will take long to attract general investors," said Rajiv Malik of RNM Financial Services in Delhi.
The consumer durables index gained the most, rising 2.44 per cent at 2,004.13, followed by the realty segment index, by 2.07 per cent at 2,472.51.
The banking index surged by 1.60 per cent at 5,674.31, with all the 18 components of the bankex closing with gains.
Government-run State Bank of India shot up by 1.08 per cent at Rs 1,330 and leading private lender ICICI Bank by 1.54 per cent at Rs 471.20.
HDFC Bank rose by 0.33 per cent at Rs 1,015.80. The power index rose by 1.33 per cent at 1,908.15; the oil and gas index by 1.32 per cent at 6,241.43; the FMCG index by 0.73 per cent at 2,006.61; the capital goods index by 0.67 per cent at 7,286.83; and the metals index by 0.59 per cent at 5,561.24.
The PSU index was up by 0.59 per cent at 5,482.39; the healthcare index by 0.11 per cent at 2,993.74; and the auto index by 0.01 per cent at 2,521.09.
However, the information technology sector, led by Infosys, declined by 1.25 per cent at 2,284.20 and the tech index by 0.96 per cent at 1,989.57.
As buying spread over a wide front, the midcap share index gained 2.17 per cent at 3,391.18 and the smallcap index by 1.58 per cent at 3,870.45.
