Japanese machine at sewage treatment plant generates electricity
A Civic body initiative to generate power with Japanese technicians has resulted in the production of 50 KW electricity in an hour.
Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) engineers worked on the project for two years.
"We started getting results last month and so far have generated 4,000 KW electricity in the past five days," said Shrinivas Kundul, executive engineer, Electricity Department, PMC.
Municipal Commissioner Mahesh Zagade, Mayor Mohansingh Rajpal, Standing Committee Chairman Arvind Shinde and many corporators congratulated Kundul for the success his efforts had brought.
"We had already started generating power from kitchen waste at six ward offices in Pune," said Zagade.
Kundul said the entire project was economical since it was budgeted at Rs 50 lakh.
"The PMC is the first civic body to install the machinery for power generation at sewage treatment plant," said Kundul.
He also claimed that the PMC could save cost in maintenance and repairs for a year.
"We hope the other municipal bodies follow our steps to generate power to make a sewage treatment plant self-sufficient," said Kundul.
Chandrasen Borhade from Ranjai NGO, who made an audit report on the Naidu Sewage Treatment Plant, said, "We had suggested the promotion of power generation from sewage, which was not possible in 2009.

The unit was not at all working properly, but if they have installed the new machinery for power generation, we will visit and check its functioning."
