Delhi crime: A 31-year-old Benin national who had been arrested in connection with a case of alleged illegal drug supply, reportedly escaped from police custody but was nabbed from Nihal Vihar in Delhi a few hours later, officials said on Monday, reported the PTI.
The suspect identified as Uche Uwadiegu was arrested on October 3 with 1 kg of heroin, an official told the PTI on Monday.
He fled on Sunday while being taken to the Chander Vihar area for further investigation, the officer said, adding that after running some distance, he sat on the motorcycle of his associate and they both sped away.
Police personnel chased him but were unsuccessful in nabbing him. A police official suffered minor injuries in the chase, the officer said.
Uwadiegu was nabbed from the Nihal Vihar area after a seven-hour search. His associate, Nanso Rexfelison (42), a Nigerian national, was arrested later, the police officer said, adding both the accused are being interrogated.
Meanwhile, in a similar incident, days after 48-year-old man arrested for allegedly stealing a bag escaped from police custody while being taken for a medical examination was nabbed by the Mira-Bhayander Vasai-Virar (MBVV) crime branch unit-3, the police said on Sunday.
According to the police, the man identified as Mangesh alias Manish Yashwant Parte had been initially arrested for bag theft case had managed to escape police custody while being transported for a medical examination on October 8.
The accused, identified as Mangesh alias Manish Yashwant Parte, hailing from Manvelpada, Virar (East), Vasai, was initially arrested on October 5, the police said.
While being escorted to a government hospital for a regular medical check-up, Parte resisted a police guard and swiftly fled from custody. A case was promptly registered under Section 224 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Virar Police Station and the crime branch had been also conducting a parallel probe in the matter, the police said.
An official said, the incident led to serious concern among senior police officers, who immediately set in motion a plan to recapture the suspect. A police team led by Inspector Pramod Badak was formed by crime Branch unit-3, which conducted a technical analysis and utilised confidential information to track down Parte.
He added, On October 14, the police team successfully apprehended Mangesh alias Manish Yashwant Parte at Borivali Railway Station. The accused allegedly had a history of theft and had been involved in various bag lifting and mobile phone theft cases at different railway stations, including Dadar, Mahim, Andheri, and Kelwa. Further investigations into these incidents are ongoing.
