Global leaders from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Germany, Sri Lanka pay tribute to Lata Mangeshkar

Following the death of Lata Mangeshkar, condolences poured in from across the world as international leaders paid their tribute to the most-loved voice of India.

Lata Mangeshkar's demise has created a "great void in the subcontinent's musical arena", Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said on Sunday as she condoled the death of the "empress of music".

In a condolence message, Hasina said Mangeshkar will remain alive forever in the hearts of the people in the region through her work.

"A great void has been created in the subcontinent's musical arena with the demise of the 'Sur Samraggi (empress of music)'," the prime minister said, praying for the salvation of the departed soul and conveying her deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

In a separate message, President Abdul Hamid also expressed his profound sorrow on the death of the legendary singer and expressed condolences to the bereaved family.

Lata Mangeshkar touched billions of hearts through her golden and unparalleled voice, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said on Sunday as he paid tribute to India's "Queen of Music" who "gave life to the phrase 'music is a universal language'".

Mangeshkar is a legend whose memory will remain in our midst for centuries through her melodious voice, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa tweeted.

"Rest In Peace Srimathi #LataMangeshkar, India's Queen of Music who touched billions of hearts through her golden and unparalleled voice," he said, sharing a photograph of the legendary singing icon.

PM Rajapaksa in a tweet said, "Rest In Peace Nightingale of #India, #LataMangeshkar. Thank you for the decades of entertainment that transcended borders & gave life to the phrase ‘music is a universal language'".

Expressing his deepest condolences to her family and the people of India, the prime minister, the elder brother of president Gotabaya Rajapaksa, said Mangeshkar's memory will live through her music.

The main Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa also expressed his deepest condolences to Mangeshkar's family.

"Lata Mangeshkar the legend who built bridges across cultures with her mesmerizing voice. My deepest condolences to her family, friends and fans," he tweeted.

Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan also expressed his condolences for the passing of Lata Mangeshkar. "With the death of Lata Mangeshkar the subcontinent has lost one of the truly great singers the world has known. Listening to her songs has given so much pleasure to so many people all over the world," he said on Twitter.

Pakistan's Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry on Sunday paid tributes to Mageshkar, saying she has ruled the world of music for decades and the magic of her voice will live forever.

"Lata Mangeshkar's death marks the end of an era in music. Lata ruled the world of music for decades and the magic of her voice will live forever," tweeted Chaudhry in a condolence message in Urdu from Beijing, where he is currently part of a delegation led by Prime Minister Imran Khan.

"Wherever Urdu is spoken and understood, there are crowds of people saying goodbye to Lata Mangeshkar," he said.

He also tweeted separately in English, saying, "a legend is no more. Lata Mageshkar was a melodious queen who ruled the world of music for decades. She was the uncrowned queen of music. Her voice shall keep ruling the hearts of people for all times to come."

Her death was trending on Twitter and almost all TV channels were running the news of her death along with a potpourri of all-time hit songs.

The state-run Pakistan Television also ran the story of her death, reflecting the singer's fan following and popularity across the borders.

Prime Minister of Nepal, Sher Bahadur Deuba, conveyed his respects and sent condolences over the legendary singer's passing away.

German Ambassador to India and Bhutan Walter J. Lindner expressed his condolences over the sad demise of the legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar on Sunday and said that her legacy will live forever.

The ambassador shared a line from Lata Mangeshkar's iconic song 'Meri Aawaaz Hi Pehchaan Hai' and expressed his condolences.

Taking to Twitter he wrote, "Meri Aawaaz Hi Pehchaan Hai ...Gar Yaad Rahe #NightingaleofIndia #LataMangeshkar Singer & musical genius passes away at the age of 92. A legend, an irreplaceable voice & an institution of music for 7 decades! Very sad news.. her legacy will live forever.. #RIP #latamangeshkarji"

Lata Mangeshkar was conferred the highest French civilian honour, Officier de la legion d'Honnneur, in 2009. French diplomat and Ambassador to India, Emmanuel Lenain said he was deeply saddened by the iconic singer's demise and offered his condolences to her fans all over the world.

"Deeply saddened by the demise of Bharat Ratna #LataMangeshkar. An institution in herself, she was conferred Officier de la Legion d'Honneur' in recognition of her incomparable singing career. Our heartfelt condolences to her loved ones and fans across the world," he wrote on Twitter.

Mangeshkar, 92, died at 8:12 am on Sunday in Mumbai due to multi-organ failure after over 28 days of Covid-19 diagnosis.
