As many as five people, all labourers, were killed and as many others were injured after being run over by a truck on a highway in Maharashtra's Buldhana district on Monday, police said, reported the PTI.
According to the news agency, the accident took place at around 5.30 am when the labourers were sleeping in makeshift huts along the side of a service road being constructed in Wadner Bholji village of the district.
A truck plying on the road ran over the labourers, a senior police official told the PTI.
Three persons died on the spot and two others succumbed to injuries in hospital, the official said.

Five persons received injuries in the incident, he said.
The truck driver is absconding, the official said, adding an investigation is on into the incident.
Meanwhile, in an another incident, twelve students were injured after a private school bus overturned near Mhow town in Madhya Pradesh on Sunday, police said, according to the PTI.
The incident took place when the bus was going from Indore to Maheshwar, a police official said, adding four of the students were critically hurt.
Eight buses of an Indore-based private school were going to Maheshwar via Mhow and Jaam Ghat on Sunday morning, Badgonda police station in-charge Kailash Solanki said, the PTI reported on Sunday.
At around 9 am, when the buses were passing through Jaam Ghat, the driver of one of the buses lost control over the wheels at a sharp curve, he said, as per the PTI.
The bus overturned, resulting in injuries to 12 students of classes 10 and 12, an official said.
Four students were critically injured and referred to Indore. They were undergoing treatment at a private hospital, the official said.
According to the news agency, the spot where the accident took place falls under Mandleshwar police station limits in Khargone district, but looking at the urgency of the situation, the Badgonda police (from Indore district) rescued the students and took them to hospital, the official said.
Thereafter, the case was transferred to the Mandleshwar police, the official further said.
