A stone structure on the premises of the University of Hyderabad was turned into a âRam temple' on Ram Navami triggering protests by the students' union and allegations that it was an attempt to "saffronise" the campus.
While many unions accused the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) of trying to disturb harmony, the latter distanced itself from the structure and called it the religious freedom of students even as it conducted the usual Ram Navami celebrations on the campus, reported Indian Express.
On Sunday, a formation of rocks near the men's hostel-F and the chief warden's office were found to be painted in saffron colour. A couple of photographs of Lord Ram were found inside a rock structure under a tree along with saffron flags. The rocks also sported âOm' and Swastika symbols, it said.
Abhishek Nandan, president of the UoH students' union, said, "We have shared our grievances and appealed to the vice-chancellor to whitewash the structure and remove the photos. Even after two days, no action has been initiated by the administration yet." University's spokesperson said the administration has asked to remove the structure.

Even as curfew continued in Madhya Pradesh's Khargone city after violence during Ram Navami celebrations, four vehicles and a garage were set ablaze, the police said on Tuesday. So far, 95 people have been arrested for the violence that started on Sunday, they said.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said the government should run a bulldozer over problems of the people such as inflation and unemployment but the BJP's bulldozer is carrying "hatred and terror". He was referring to razing of shops and homes of the accused in the Khargone violence.
