The President expressed that the relationship between India and Singapore has grown immensely since Singapore's independence in 1965. He highlighted the strengthening of ties with India, particularly following the announcement of a comprehensive strategic partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Singapore last September.

Shanmugaratnam emphasised the longstanding cooperation between the two nations, with India being one of the first countries to recognise Singapore’s independence. The President described India and Singapore as natural partners, united in a mutually beneficial relationship across various sectors.

Singapore has remained the largest investor in India for several years, underlining the strength of the business relationship between the two countries. Shanmugaratnam discussed the deepening defence cooperation and the growing focus on skilling initiatives between the nations.

Both nations are exploring new initiatives in the digital and sustainability sectors, aiming to enhance mutual interests. In the digital space, discussions are ongoing about establishing a data corridor between India’s GIFT City and Singapore for secure financial data exchange.

Sustainability is a priority for both countries, with efforts underway to create renewable energy corridors. The Singapore President also spoke about the expansion of ties in sectors such as semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, logistics, and maintenance for the aerospace sector.
