On January 21, hundreds of Trump supporters who were serving prison sentences for their involvement in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack were released. This followed Trump’s decision to pardon over 1,500 people, including some who had allegedly assaulted police officers, as he took office. The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that 211 individuals were freed from federal prisons due to Trump’s order. One of those released was Tom Vournas, a member of the Florida-based ‘Proud Boys,’ who had pleaded guilty to felony charges related to the Capitol attack. Trump’s pardons, which were larger than expected, drew criticism from police, their families, and lawmakers, including some Republicans.
