In a bizarre murder, an Aussie man woke up on top of his dead wife on the kitchen floor and instead of raising an alarm, went straight to bed, a court has been told.

Frank Haschka is standing trial for the murder of Monique Haschka at the couple's Woollahra home on December 28, 2007.

The jury heard that the marriage was already in tatters including heavy drinking and a past affair by Haschka's wife, who died from asphyxia.

"She snapped, grabbed a knife and poked me with it and I pushed her to the floor and I don't remember much more because I was drinking too," News.com.au quoted Haschka as saying in a statement to police, read to the court by Pat Barrett, prosecutor.

"I just remember pushing her to the floor and then I woke up on top of her and she was dead," he said.

After that, he headed towards his bed to sleep and when he woke up, he called son Andrew and allegedly said: "I killed her".

"She went ballistic ... she came at me ... I killed her," Haschka told police in a statement a short time later.

He remembered his wife's legs kicking out and said he "must have" strangled her but couldn't remember doing so.

However, Haschka claims his wife's death was accidental and he cried in court as details of the couple's relationship were read out.

"It is the defence case it was unintentional, his wife was accidentally asphyxiated," Haschka's lawyer John Dailly, told the court.

Dailly added that Haschka loved his wife and was ready to overlook her past affair and alcohol consumption.
