At least 46 people, including six soldiers, were killed when hundreds of pro-Taliban militants attacked a check post and a camp of the Pakistani security forces in the country's restive northwest tribal region today.
The militants, most of them foreigners, attacked the check post and the camp in Mohmand Agency, where security forces recently launched an offensive against the Taliban.
The militants used rockets and mortars in the attacks and the security forces retaliated with artillery fire.
Sources in the paramilitary Frontier Corps were quoted by TV channels as saying that six security personnel and 40 militants were killed in the fighting. They said six paramilitary troopers were also injured.

Some other media reports put the death toll among the security forces at 10. The injured security personnel were flown in helicopters to Peshawar, sources said.
The exchange of fire at the check post in Lakaro continued for three hours, local reports said.
Lakaro is considered a stronghold of the Taliban and militants have been very active in the region over the past year.
After the Pakistan Army launched a major operation against the Taliban in the restive Bajaur tribal region, many militants moved to the nearby Mohmand Agency.
