Robin van Persie gave Arsenal a 1-0 win over Roma in the Champions League last 16 first leg on Tuesday but the Gunners may live to regret missing a golden chance to book their place in the quarter-finals.
Arsene Wenger's side dominated for long periods at the Emirates Stadium without turning their enterprising play into further goals and had to settle for an uncomfortably narrow margin of victory through van Persie's first half penalty. Not for the first time this season it was the Gunners' misfiring forward line that cost them, with Nicklas Bendtner guilty of two misses that could come back to haunt Arsenal in the return leg in Rome on March 11.
While Wenger will know his team should have won by more, he can take heart from the way they outplayed Roma with the kind of vibrant display that has been absent too often this season.
"I am happy with our performance but of course there was room to score more goals. That is the regret we have," Wenger said. "You never know what a good result is in the European Cup but from this we know we can create chances against them."
