Australia's recent century jinx continued on the first day of the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan at the MCG as openers Simon Katich and Shane Watson both fell just short of triple figures.

Watson is still waiting for his maiden Test ton after being run out for 93 in bizarre circumstances shortly after the tea break, while Katich was dismissed for 98 in the last hour before stumps. Australia were 305 for three on Day One.

Australia's batsmen have now made 18 half-centuries this summeru00a0-- including 15 in the three-Test series against West Indies - without converting any into centuries.

The last Australian centurion was Hussey in the fifth Ashes Test at The Oval in August.

For Watson, there was more heartbreak as he lost his wicket in sight of his first Test century for the third consecutive match.u00a0 He missed tons against the Windies in Adelaide (96) and Perth (89).
