Tuhe journalist who broke the spot-fixing scandal for The News of the World (NOWT) British newspaper has put more than a 100 offenders behind bars.

"The match fixing story was broken by our veteran Investigations Editor Mazher Mahmood.

"He has enjoyed a long and successful career at NOWT and has been responsible, through his investigations into crime, for the jailing of more than 100 criminals," said the newspaper's spokesperson Matthew Nixson.

Mahmood has been given top security by his employers.

"We take the security of all our staff very seriously especially Mazher given the high-profile investigations. But I can't say more than that about security," said Nixson.

Elaborating the crack newsman's achievements, Nixson said: "He often works undercover, and his recent scoops aside from cricket include the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, offering cash for access to the British Royal Family and boxer Joe Calzaghie apologising for taking cocaine.

"Mazher and our lawyers have been liasing with Scotland Yard police who in turn have been speaking with the International Cricket Council. We will co-operate fully with any investigation," said Nixson.

Nixson confirmed that the currency notes used in the sting operation that nailed bookie Mazhar Majeed and projected his links with Pakistani players are identifiable," he said.

"The serial numbers of the notes used in the investigation were recorded by us so they should be identifiable," Nixon added.
