Kolkatans would have to wait longer for a date with the likes of Brazilian soccer legends Pele, Cafu and Roberto Carols, with a Jan 23 exhibition match featuring them and other former stars being postponed, the event promoters announced Sunday.
A fresh date will be announced next week.
"We regret to announce, due to unavoidable circumstances the match originally scheduled for Jan 23, 2012 in Kolkata, India has been postponed to a later date. The new date will be informed to you in the next week," JPR Events said in a statement.
Legendary German rock band Scorpions' bass guitarist Rudolf Schenker and world motorbike champion Tim Trenker were also scheduled to take part in the Salt Lake stadium game in the exhibition match at the Salt Lake Stadium against the "Indian Dream Team" to raise funds for the Sikkim quake victims.
"However, we will still be having a match in Gangtok, Sikkim between Worldstar XI vs Sikkim United, which will feature some of the players originally scheduled to make the trip who will be joined by some former Indian stars," the statement said.
The match will be held Jan 22 at Paljor stadium, Gangtok. The list of the players would be announced soon.
"The Superstar XI will be joined by some well known former players of India as well as a couple of celebrities," the promoters said.
Sources said West Bengal Sports Minister Madan Mitra was unhappy with the event promoters for keeping the government in the dark about the details of the match which involved world famous footballers.
