A Cristiano Ronaldo goal in stoppage time was not enough for Portugal to turn the score around after Denmark had gained a comfortable lead with goals from Nicklas Bendtner and Michael Krohn-Dehli.
The result sees the Euro 2004 runners-up leapfrogged by Denmark in Group H and they will now enter the play-off stage for a place in Poland-Ukraine.
"There are days like this. We are sad, this result is a disappointment for everyone," Nani told RTP Informacao.
The Manchester United ace noted that Portugal are no strangers to being in the play-offs. "We will have a second chance in the play-offs. We have been through this before.
"The important thing is to return to our clubs and do a good job, so that we can be at our best when the play-offs come around."
