The latest knee injury suffered by Australia all-rounder Andrew Symonds is not as serious as his previous setbacks, Cricket Australia doctor Trefor James has confirmed.

The Queenslander has played three domestic matches since returning following the knee operation that forced him out of the Australian team for last month's third Test against South Africa.

But after getting through the first two matches in his comeback, the 33-year-old featured little in the third after experiencing soreness in the knee which forced him to sit out the final two sessions of the day with his knee iced.

Symonds flew to Melbourne after the completion of the match to visit James, who is confident that Symonds will be back on the field soon, possibly as early as this weekend.

"Andrew has pinched inflamed tissue in the joint of his right knee. We expect him to recover quickly," James said.

"If the speed of his recovery continues he may be available for selection for the Ford Ranger Cup final this Sunday."
