The Multi-Purpose Squad, which was recently given the responsibility of taking stringent action against people and construction sites found wasting drinking water, has taken action against 114 people and collected more than Rs 43,000 in fines in just the last 20 days.
The areas where maximum wastage was found - Bibavewadi, Sangamwadi, Sahakar Nagar, Tilak Road and Warje-Karve Nagar - were the ones that are facing an acute shortage of water.
Deputy Municipal Commissioner Suresh Jagtap said that many illegal tap connections were found in Sahakar Nagar and immediate action was taken against the residents concerned in the area.
An illegal water pipe was also seized by the squad in Warje-Karvenagar.
In the Kasba-Vishrambaug Wada Ward Office area, the squad not only took action against those found wasting water, but also cleaned four wells which can now be used by residents, said Ward Officer Arun Khilari.u00a0
