Mark Hughes's expensively-assembled side delivered another repayment on their manager's 100 million pounds spending spree as they moved into fourth place in the Premier League with their third successive league win.
Once again City's hero was Togo striker Adebayor, who cost 25 million pounds from Arsenal in the close-season, and has now scored three goals including two winners, in three league games.
Adebayor didn't dwell on his winner at Fratton Park for long as he immediately set his sights on scoring in City's next match against his old club Arsenal on September 12.
"My confidence is very high," he told Sky Sports. "I want to keep on enjoying myself, keep scoring goals for this club, especially as I will soon play against all my old friends at Arsenal Gael Clichy, Alex Song, Emmanuel Eboue.
"It will be a tough game for us. We know how good Arsenal are. I think if we play with this motivation we have a chance to win because we are playing at home."
