Another feather in the cap for Gitanjali Gems was the India Shining Star CSR Award, which they received in the Gems and Jewellery category at the first 'CSR Thought Leadership Conclave 2011' organised by the Wockhardt Foundation.
This added to the many prestigious awards received in recognition of the company's efforts in the field of community health and welfare. Doing the honours was none other than Union Cabinet Minister for water resources and for minority affairs, Salman Khurshid.

These awards are recognition for initiatives like the Saksham, Sujyot and Saakshar that were undertaken along with various NGOs. Saksham is a programme to empower people with disabilities and create conditions for their rehabilitation and integration into society.
At their factory in Hyderabad, Gitanjali employs 250 people with disabilities and plans to increase this number further during the course of the year.
A company official says, "The India Shining Star award is definitely a great encouragement and we hope that other companies in the gem and jewellery sector will also be encouraged to employ people with disabilities.
