Breaking into Bollywood

My biggest challenge is surviving in the industry. People can't figure out where to place me as a comedian or as a character actor. But I am not complaining since I didn't aspire to be a hero in the first place.

I was working as an assistant director with Channel V when Shashank Ghosh pushed me to start anchoring. Films were a gradual progression. Personally, I feel that it's been quite decent so far.

Right now, I am doing both alternative and mainstream cinema but I always feel that I am treading a fine line.

Passion for cinema

I love cinema that's rooted in reality and has an edge to it. The subject or story is very important for me.

I loved No Smoking and Bheja Fry. In fact, with Bheja Fry, I felt that I had pushed myself too far. It was quite crazy. I was very relieved when it was declared a hit.

Since I work mostly in small budget movies, I sometimes take certain risks with my looks et al, which can be counter productive. But at the same time, I feel lucky to work in the kind of films I believe in.

My movies, my world

My world revolves around movies and I watch films from all over the world. Music is my next passion. My taste in music is very eclectic and depends on my mood.

I listen to Qawwali, rock, pop, classical and country music. Sting is my all-time favourite. Reading is one of my many past-times.

But I read a lot of philosophical and non-fiction books since I get my usual dose of fiction from all the film scripts I go through.
