Sagarika Ghatge on the film’s set

Chak De! India actor Sagarika Z Ghatge returns to acting after a 5-year break

Ending her five-year hiatus, Sagarika Z Ghatge is returning to the screen with Lalat, directed by Jaivi Dhanda. The actor was last seen in the television film, Footfairy (2020). What kept her away from acting for half a decade? “It was a combination of not being excited with the offers that came my way, and feeling that a break was the right thing to do,” she shares. When she was approached for Lalat, it was an immediate yes for Ghatge. Her character of Bhagwati, a sculptor, had everything she was looking for to make a comeback. “Bhagwati is not only strong but also brave. I was tense when I took up this role, wondering if I’d be able to do justice to it. But if something scares you a little, you should take it up as an actor,” asserts the Chak De! India (2007) actor. With the OTT boom, opportunities may have shot up. But Ghatge notes that it hasn’t been easy for her to land a project. The perception that she doesn’t want to pursue acting only made things harder. “Perhaps there is a perception that I don’t want to work, but that’s far from the truth. There are plenty of opportunities with the variety of films and series being made today. However, it hasn’t been easy to land a film. After taking a break, getting back to work wasn’t simple. But I’m grateful to have a film now that will showcase my work.”

Anoushka Shankar

Anoushka Shankar: ‘Music speaks to my soul, but it’s not my therapy’

Seated before us for this interview, Anoushka Shankar has eyes pinned on her owing to her grace and beauty. She doesn’t carry the weight of her multiple accolades, including the 11 Grammy nominations she has received in the last 20 years, or the Oxford honorary doctorate that she was awarded a few months ago. The latter, she says, made her feel “very grown up and proper.” “Honorary doctorates are rarely [given]. I would joke about [receiving] them. A university does not take the decision to give it lightly. It’s a recognition of being an expert in the field,” she says, still seemingly giddy with the title, even as she has her eyes set on the upcoming Grammy Awards, in which she will vie for two gongs. In this interview, Shankar discusses being nominated in the Best Global Music Performance and New Age Album categories, and the making of Chapter III: We Return To Light, the last of her miniseries. Edited excerpts of the interview. In our past conversations, you have, though not critically, referred to the fact that the categories in which you are often nominated, including Global Music Performance, may seem restrictive.I did, probably critically too. I’ve had a long journey, so I don’t know if my opinions have changed. But I have a greater understanding of the industry and how things work. Music, on one side, is an art form. I do this because I love it and because it speaks to my soul. And on the other side, it’s a career. And this [Grammy nominations] definitely falls into that side of things. These are job-related things. The way the industry is carved out globally is tricky—the Global Music and New Age Music categories are known to be the hardest categories because they’re not niche. People who vote within categories are experts within that field of music. Global music is everything that’s not from Europe and America; basically, music of every kind, every culture, and every time period. There are no experts, as such, that can vote with the same level of expertise across those categories. So, while all the awards are subjective, these become even more subjective. It’s really down to who the voters in those years are. A Grammy nomination in itself is of great importance for any artiste. A lot of people, however, want to attach importance to winning it. Having received 11 nominations in 20 years, do you still see a win as essential? We’re back to discussing the music business. These things have commercial value—if you’re a Grammy nominee, that affects people subconsciously. If you say you are a Grammy winner, that’s more impressive. So, hypothetically, winning would have some prestige attached to it. But someone told me on my eighth loss, ‘Getting nominated over and over again is a career. One potential win, and then never being heard of again, is a flash in the pan.’ So, to be nominated again and again is a huge honour. And, if I have to be really frank, other than the few artistes, like my father [Pandit Ravi Shankar], Zakir uncle [Hussain], and legends who transcend everything, for the rest, it’s down to who’s willing to play the game, who does the networking, and who shows up for the nomination branches. To people who are willing to put in that effort, it’s cool. But that’s not for me. I feel each chapter of the miniseries has gotten better. After all these years in the industry, what do you continue to do to hone your craft? In February, I will mark my 30th anniversary [as a musician]. So, there’s been a long arc of progression. But in the last few years, my focus has been on removing as much filter between me and my music as possible. That means allowing myself to be more vulnerable and allowing people [access] into my craft and the emotions that [lead to] my music. It can seem to be intimidating. I’m just making melodies; music that people can connect to, emotionally. So, I’m simplifying it. I’m choosing to call it play, instead of practice. And that changes the attitude of how I approach my music. It’s playful; about making connection. Creating vulnerability and closeness with my instrument has been a big part of my recent journey. Also, when you collaborate with another artiste, especially from a different traditional culture, you open yourself up to this whole other world and style of music. Does being vulnerable make you a better musician?  I wouldn’t go so far as to say that music is my therapy. It might be my outlet, but it’s not my therapy. My therapy is my therapy. Growing up, having difficult experiences, and learning from that, I know that we all need each other. I have a language for my experiences. I also have experiences that I can help others with. Having endured a difficult phase puts me in a place where I can help someone else. I started to apply that in my art. When we hear music that artistes of your kind create, we wonder if there’s scope to bring that within the mainstream music space. Do you believe there is scope to bridge these areas? There is a lot of scope to use a wide range of music in Indian films and broaden the range of music that exists. But it needs people who are willing to take that chance. Within the music and film industries, across the globe, everything is getting narrower—the people who take the financial decisions take the safest decisions because they feel like it’s guaranteed to give back what they invest. It’s understandable. But there’s an element of risk-taking that needs to happen if you want to go broad. Because Indian cinema has opened up to such a large extent, there will be a ripple effect, and a lot more rooms will open up for the kind of music that supports this.

Fateh: Sonu Sood speaks about challenges he faced during his directorial debut

Actor Sonu Sood has opened up about the challenges he faced during his directorial debut with the film titled 'Fateh.' In a conversation with ANI, he talked about directing the film and said, "Yes of course I also have to direct more films. I truly enjoyed directing the film and it is about the experience and satisfaction you get as a director so of course get ready for the second soon." The film revolves around the fight against cybercrime and has struck a chord with moviegoers. The film is inspired by real-life events during the COVID-19 pandemic. One of Fateh's biggest draws is its action sequences. International stunt director Lee Whittaker, known for 'Captain Marvel' and 'Fast & Furious 5', choreographed the high-octane stunts for the film. The music of the film has been a standout. "To the Moon" a song by Hans Zimmer heightens the stakes. On the challenges he faced while making his debut, Sood shared, "I wanted to work with the best of the best in the world. A lot of people including the action director who shot 'Fast and Furious', 'Jurassic Park' and the song which was written by Hans Zimmer, 'To the Moon'... so getting all these people from Hollywood was a big challenge but I like I said when you are doing your first you have to make sure you get the best." As the movie focuses on scams and cybercrime, Sood shared, "Everything that comes, comes with pros and cons. The kind of scams that we come across, those deepfakes, and instant loan apps, always target the needy. It is not about a rich or famous getting scammed but it is about a common man getting scammed and how much suffering they go through. It is something that we need to make aware of every single common man in this country. You have to be very careful while you are using those mobile phones. It has got something that can change life." He further added, "You have to be more informed, right and make sure that people around you especially the elders, the common man should be more aware of these scams happening. When you are in need that is the time you are very naive, very vulnerable and you tend to get targeted. I think in schools and colleges It has to be brought to notice this comes that are happening around you. The new generation is more careful about it." He also expressed his gratitude towards his fans for showering their love on his project. "Thank you so much for the wishes. Yes, the whole team is pretty excited, the film is doing well in the second weeks also. We have more shows which also give you a feeling that we are on the right track and people love the film, they are coming back again and again to watch the film so it is a satisfying feeling as an actor and director for the first time and I am sure that this week is also going to be rocking as well." "I always wanted to do action that no one has seen on the screen so I think Fateh was one such thing that I will always remember and cherish throughout my life. it is an action sequence that all Indians should be proud of. I feel that but I said I am a first-time film-maker, there is so much to learn but in the second film I will try to give my best," he added. Directed by Sonu Sood, Fateh hit theatres on January 10. The film recorded a week-one gross of Rs21.18 crore as per analysts. Sonu Sood along with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha MP Manoj Tiwari attended a screening of the movie 'Fateh'. 12th Fail actor Anant Joshi to play UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in biopic

From Vivek Oberoi’s PM Narendra Modi (2019) to Kangana Ranaut’s latest release Emergency, politicians and their journeys have often found a place in Hindi cinema. Now, another biopic is in the works. Mid-day has learnt that a biopic on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is being helmed by Ravindra Gautam, who previously directed the second season of Maharani. Anant Joshi, seen in 12th Fail (2023) and Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery (2023), will portray the younger version of Adityanath in the yet-untitled film that will trace how a boy, born as Ajay Singh Bisht in Uttarakhand, became among the most influential figures of the Bharatiya Janata Party.   A source close to the production revealed, “The movie delves deep into Yogi Adityanath’s early years, his spiritual awakening at the Gorakhnath Math, and his eventual rise in politics. Anant’s portrayal captures the inner conflict and drive of a young man seeking purpose.” In the 1990s, Adityanath left his home and became a disciple of Mahant Avaidyanath, the then-chief of the Gorakhnath Math. He was made the head seer after Avaidyanath’s demise in 2014.  Yogi Adityanath; (right) Paresh Rawal. Pics/AFP, Instagram In the movie, Paresh Rawal has been cast as Avaidyanath, Adityanath’s spiritual mentor, whose teachings profoundly influenced his life. The biopic, which rolled last November, has been shot extensively across Uttar Pradesh, including Gorakhpur, the seat of Adityanath’s spiritual and political journey. Currently, the team is filming in Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai. Another insider adds, “The team also shot at the Guru Nanak Khalsa college last week.  Before that, they conducted a 45-day schedule in north India, filming in Rishikesh and other iconic locations connected to Adityanath’s life.
