‘1 dollar per hour’: Kim Kardashian demands better pay for firefighters

Reality TV star and entrepreneur Kim Kardashian has demanded better pay for firefighters risking their lives amid the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles. Kim took to her Instagram stories and mentioned how they’re working 24-hour shifts despite getting paid only one dollar an hour (Rs 86). She highlighted that their salary has been the same since 1984 and urged the government to give them a well-deserved hike.  Kim Kardashian demands salary hike for firefighters Kim Kardashian wrote on her Instagram stories, “I have spent the last week watching my city burning. And have seen and spoken to many firefighters who are up all night long using every ounce of their strength to save our community.” She continued, “On all 5 fires in Los Angeles, there are hundreds of incarcerated firefighters, risking their lives to save us. They are on the Palisades fire and Eaton fire in Pasadena working 24-hour shifts. They get paid almost nothing, risk their lives, and some have died, to prove to the community that they have changed and are now first responders. I see them as heroes.” “The incarcerated firefighters have been paid $1 / hour to risk their lives, and this pay has been the same since 1984. It has never been raised with inflation. It's never been raised when fires got worse and many died.  This year there was an agreement to raise the incarcerated firefighter pay to $5/hour, but it got shot down last minute. I am urging @cagovernor to do what no Governor has done in 4 decades and raise the incarcerated firefighter pay to a rate that honors a human being risking their life to save our lives and homes,” added Kim.  Destruction caused by LA wildfires  The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the death toll from the wildfires ravaging the area has risen to 16. Since the fires first began on Tuesday just north of downtown Los Angeles, they have burned more than 12,000 structures, a term that includes homes, apartment buildings, businesses, outbuildings, and vehicles. No cause has been determined for the largest fires, and early estimates indicate the wildfires could be the nation's costliest ever.  Celebs such as Paris Hilton, Adam Brody, Leighton Meester, Anna Faris, Spencer and Heidi Pratt, Cameron Mathison, and Jennifer Hewitt have lost their homes to the fires.

Miley Cyrus pens heartfelt note for people dealing with LA wildfires

Actress-singer Miley Cyrus has penned an emotional post amidst the ongoing LA wildfires and had said that Los Angeles represents 'living the dream,' but the reality today is wreckage and destruction. Sharing a photo of her destroyed Malibu home years ago, she reflected on her own experience of losing her multi-million dollar mansion with former-husband Liam Hemsworth, reports aceshowbiz.com. She described her pain of facing a pile of rubble instead of the loved ones she expected to greet her at the door. "It's a feeling you don't ever forget. My soul aches for those experiencing this devastation firsthand," wrote the “Wrecking Ball” singer. She added: "Los Angeles represents 'living the dream,' but the reality today is wreckage and destruction." Cyrus expressed her gratitude for organisations like the Malibu Foundation, which she helped launch in 2018, and announced her personal support for various relief efforts. "Time, resources, and dedication from inside and outside our community will heal us. But it hurts deeply for now... Love always, Miley," she concluded. In addition to Cyrus, several other celebrities have contributed to wildfire relief efforts. Kim Kardashian is donating critical supplies via her Skims brand while Jamie Lee Curtis has donated $1 million. Paris Hilton launched a relief fund after losing her Malibu beach house and pledged to match donations up to $100,000. Halle Berry and Snoop Dogg gave away clothing to the victims, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle volunteered in the kitchen and helped to feed first responders and distribute essential items to those in need. Jennifer Garner offered her assistance in the food truck to serve meals to the affected community. At least 16 have been confirmed dead and over 12,000 structures have been damaged and destroyed in the raging Los Angeles wildfires that started last week. The authorities have warned that conditions are expected to worsen in the coming days as devastating wildfires continue to rage across different parts of Los Angeles County, leading to widespread disruptions, including school closures and the cancellation of entertainment, sports, and community events. The Los Angeles Unified School District, the second-largest public school district in the United States, closed schools on Thursday and Friday to fend students and staff from hazardous air quality. Superintendent Alberto Carvalho emphasised that travelling to school posed greater risks than staying at home, particularly for children with respiratory conditions. Some campuses near evacuation zones also experienced power outages and low attendance before the closures were announced. Currently, six wildfires are still burning across Los Angeles County, scorching nearly 36,000 acres. One of the biggest, the Palisades fire, has burned over 21,300 acres and damaged or destroyed more than 5,300 structures so far. On the eastside of Los Angeles, fires in Eaton Canyon and Highland Park affected schools and homes, with reports of damage to two elementary schools and parts of Palisades Charter High School. The Eaton Fire has consumed nearly 14,000 acres with up to 5,000 structures damaged or destroyed.

Alec files lawsuit against prosecutors & investigators in 'Rust' shooting case

Nearly six months after his involuntary manslaughter trial was dismissed, actor Alec Baldwin has filed a civil lawsuit against the prosecutors and investigators involved in the case, seeking justice for what he claims was malicious prosecution and violations of his civil rights. The actor, who faced charges in connection to the tragic 2021 fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of 'Rust', took legal action on January 9, filing the lawsuit in Santa Fe, New Mexico, according to E! News. Baldwin's lawsuit accuses special prosecutor Kari Morrissey, Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies, and others involved in the investigation of wrongly targeting him. The suit alleges that these officials sought to "scapegoat Baldwin for the acts and omissions of others" despite the lack of evidence to support the charges, according to E! News. Baldwin, who also served as a producer on 'Rust', claims that the prosecution's actions were driven by professional or political motives, violating his constitutional rights in the process. According to a statement by Baldwin's legal team obtained by E! News, the prosecutors were "blinded by their desire to convict Alec Baldwin for all the wrong reasons, and at any cost." The lawsuit further contends that the criminal process was improperly used against him, and Baldwin is seeking punitive damages "to the fullest extent permitted by law." In a statement to E! News, the office of prosecutor Kari Morrissey acknowledged that Baldwin had been considering a lawsuit for over a year. The statement added, "We look forward to our day in court." Baldwin's legal representatives, Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro expressed their discontent with the prosecution in a statement, as per E! News. "Criminal prosecutions are supposed to be about the search for truth and justice, not to pursue personal or political gain or harass the innocent," they said, adding, "Kari Morrissey and the other defendants violated that basic principle, over and over, and trampled on Alec Baldwin's rights," as per E! News. They emphasized that the lawsuit aims to hold the defendants accountable for their actions and to prevent future misconduct. Baldwin's trial was abruptly dismissed in July 2023, when Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer ruled that the case should be dropped with prejudice after accusations of evidence suppression emerged. The dismissal followed the revelation that key evidence, including ammunition that could have been crucial to Baldwin's defence, was not disclosed by the prosecution, as per E! News. In July, Baldwin's defence team argued that prosecutors had concealed evidence, specifically the ammunition provided by former police officer Troy Teske, which could point to an external source of the live rounds found on the 'Rust' set. Baldwin's team claimed that the failure to disclose this evidence prevented them from properly defending the actor, as per E! News. Meanwhile, Baldwin, who has continued to express his gratitude to his supporters, took to Instagram following the dismissal, sharing an emotional message to thank those who had stood by him and his family. Angelina Jolie and her son help people amid Los Angeles wildfire crisis

Amid the raging wildfires in Los Angeles, Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie and her 16-year-old son, Knox, have been seen taking proactive steps to help those in need. On Thursday, the mother-son duo was photographed shopping for supplies, such as food and water, to assist those affected by the devastating fires, as per Page Six. In an interview, Jolie shared that she was personally housing people at her Los Feliz home. "Right now, I'm taking care of people close to me and having them at my house," the 'Maria' actor said, as per Page Six. She expressed deep concern for the ongoing crisis and revealed that she plans to donate to fire relief efforts in the coming weeks. Jamie Lee Curtis, alongside her husband Christopher Guest, also made headlines by donating USD 1 million to the victims of the fires. Kylie Jenner, Mark Zuckerberg, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle also contributed to local relief organisations, as per Page Six. On the other hand, Jennifer Garner volunteered her time with World Central Kitchen, a nonprofit organisation that provides meals to those impacted by disasters, as per Page Six. While many celebrities are helping others, some are on the receiving end of tragedy. Several high-profile celebs, including Mel Gibson, Adam Brody, Leighton Meester, and Anthony Hopkins, have lost their homes in the wildfires. Ricki Lake, who also experienced the loss of her home, shared her grief on Instagram, "This loss is immeasurable. It's the spot where we got married three years ago. I grieve along with all of those suffering during this apocalyptic event." As the fires continue to rage, the situation in Southern California has become increasingly dire. At least 11 people have lost their lives in the wildfire crisis in Southern California, officials reported, according to a report by NBC News. Firefighters experienced a brief respite as the strong Santa Ana winds temporarily died down, but these winds were expected to pick up again. Meanwhile, The New York Times reported that at least 18 individuals have been arrested on charges such as looting and identity theft. The Los Angeles Fire Department on Saturday issued a mandatory evacuation. Mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass in a post on X wrote, "A mandatory evacuation order is immediately in effect for the Palisades Fire from Sunset Blvd North to Encino Reservoir and from the 405 Freeway West to Mandeville Canyon. This area was in an evacuation warning and is now under an immediate evacuation order." On Friday, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced he would initiate an independent investigation to address concerns over firefighters running out of water early during their efforts, describing the issue as "deeply troubling." The largest blaze, the Palisades fire between Santa Monica and Malibu, was 8 per cent contained on Friday, meaning firefighters have been able to establish lines around that much of the perimeter to prevent the blaze from spreading. To the east, firefighters have contained 3 per cent of the Eaton fire, near Altadena and Pasadena. Both fires now rank in the top five most destructive fires in California's history, The New York Times reported. In a post on X, Newsom informed that the Lidia Fire is now at 98 per cent containment across 395 acres. US President Joe Biden warned that although the winds have died down, they will remain a threat until next week. In a post on X, he said, "Earlier the @VP and I received a briefing from @CAgovernor, @MayorOfLA, and @FEMA_Deanne. While the winds have died down, we expect they will remain a threat until early next week. We'll keep working 24/7 to support state and local officials to fully stop these fires." German filmmaker Wim Wenders's India visit to kick-off with a film festival

Wim Wenders—King of the Road—The India Tour will bring the German filmmaker, 79, to the country for the first time for 25 days. Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, the founder of the Film Heritage Foundation that has organised a retrospective that will feature 18 films of the veteran filmmaker, reveals that the tour will kick off in Mumbai over a five-day leg.  “He will be here from [February] 5 to 9, and we plan to show his films at Regal [Cinemas] and Metro. There are two films that are in 3D, Pina [2011] and Anselmo [2023]. They will be shown in Metro. On the 6th, there will also be a talk by him at NCPA, a masterclass of sorts. There will also be a filmmakers’ forum, where top filmmakers will meet him,” says Dungarpur, further sharing the influence that “one of the greatest masters” has had on his life.  “Many of his films are cult films. He has influenced a whole generation of filmmakers [and has created] everything, from documentaries to fiction. I made a film called CzechMate (2018), and before that, I made another called Celluloid Man (2012). Those films were deeply influenced by Wim Wenders, and I have always wanted to do something with him. He has been aware of the work that the Film Heritage Foundation has been doing and has also restored all his films.” Long considered the man who pioneered the genre of road films, Wenders will travel across five Indian cities—Mumbai, Pune, Thiruvananthapuram, Kolkata, and New Delhi.  “Since this is his inaugural visit to India, the idea was to travel together and see what happens. His last film, Perfect Days, also emerged out of [similar travels]. He had travelled to Japan, and [that film] was nominated for the Oscar. So, something might emerge from here as well. I feel, [he agreed to come to India this time because of] the value he sets in the foundation and the respect he has for [our] work. [A lot] emerges from his journeys and the roads [he travels]. He has made films all over the world. And maybe this trip will help him explore India. With a country as diverse as ours, his films [could] begin to have the flavour of what India represents. To travel with him for 25 days [will be interesting].”

Interstellar

Christopher Nolan's Interstellar finally gets re-release date in India

In December last year, Christopher Nolan's classic film 'Interstellar' was re-released worldwide to mark its 10th anniversary. However, India was not on the list of the release due to Allu Arjun's 'Pushpa 2' taking up all screens in the country, especially the IMAX screen. While the news came as a disappointment to fans of the sci-fi film, there is some happy news coming our way.  Interstellar India re-release Warner Bros India has announced the re-release date for Interstellar on Indian screens. The film will be hitting theatres including IMAX screens from February 7. "The stars are aligning again! Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar returns to cinemas in India and also in IMAX on February 7. Relive the journey beyond time and space," wrote Warner Bros India on their official Twitter handle.  About Interstellar 'Interstellar', which originally premiered on November 5, 2014, grossed around $730 million globally, further earning five Academy Award nominations, and winning Best Visual Effects. The film's narrative revolves around a team of pioneers who undertake the most important mission in human history—to discover whether mankind has a future among the stars. Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey stars as the ex-pilot turned farmer who is forced to leave his family and a foundering Earth behind to lead an expedition traveling beyond this galaxy. Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon, John Lithgow, Michael Caine, Timothée Chalamet, Ellen Burstyn, Bill Irwin, Wes Bentley, David Oyelowo, and Casey Affleck play key roles in the film. Upon its re-release in the US last month, Interstellar became the ninth highest-grossing IMAX release of all time, following Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It earned $4.5 million across 166 screens in the US and Canada. Talking about the success of the re-release of Interstellar after 10 years, Christopher Nolan told the Associated Press, "I was just so gratified by the response. It’s really thrilling when people respond to your work at any point. But 10 years later, to have new audiences coming and experiencing it in the way that we’d originally intended it on the big IMAX screens and, in particular, on those IMAX film prints? It’s really rewarding to see that it continues to have a life.”
