It's raining underworld films in Sandalwood. A large section of the commercial films in the industry is today typically marked by stories based on the underbelly of the Silicon Valley. Movies of such genre have become the order of the day and the trend is here to stay.

Violent love: Vijay in Duniya

The trend started with the Shivaraj Kumar starrer Om, a ground-breaking cinema directed by Upendra. Om brought us up close and personal with the rank and file of the Bangalore underworld and it quickly turned into a contemporary classic. This movie made a realistic statement on the underworld even as it stayed within the commercial format. The film gave a new lease of life to Shivaraj Kumar and catapulted Upendra to a different league altogether.

After the stupendous success of Om, many movies along the same lines were churned out and even today the underworld has remained a favourite subject for most of the filmmakers. However, barring a couple of exceptions, none could match the technical brilliance and the spell of Om. The fact that Om ran to packed houses in all its re-releases is testimony to the magic of Upendra's craft and Shivaraj Kumar's power-packed performance.

Popular belief

There even exists a popular belief in a section of the Kannada film industry that the posters and other publicity materials must carry images of a person, preferably the hero, brandishing a long sickle or a machete, the most preferred weapon in the rowdy films, to ensure good opening and box office success. The 'long' brand of films usually even carries taglines like 'a violent love story' to draw crowds. While newcomers prefer sickle brand of movies to achieve instant stardom, the veterans and the superstars too use such films to revive their flagging careers.

The Kannada audience is now literally fed up to its teeth watching the run-of-the-mill underworld flicks.

Filmmakers spend more time in justifying violence than condemning it. It's high time they realised that they have to tread a new path and try to look for fresh ideas and innovative narration that would give a new fillip to Sandalwood.
