Of all the things that have been revolutionised thanks to the electronic age, graphic art is, perhaps, the least acknowledged. "Graphic art is all around you. It is the signage that helps you get to the ICU in a hospital, or find your way around a new building," says Divya Thakur, creative director of Design Temple. Through Decade in Design, an exhibition that opens today, she hopes to change the way you look at this new-age art form.
Among the exhibits to watch out for is the credit title design for Mira Nair's The Namesake, and exhibits on Contemporary India that the firm designed for The Victoria Albert Museum, London. "The idea is to make sure that the spectator sees and feels graphic art in every way," says Thakur.
Urban, contemporary and witty have been keywords that this design think tank has worked around. Whether it is a poster titled, Dhobi, that shows how the washing machine has taken the job of our good ol' dhobi, or Aujar, the multi-utility toolbox that can hold anything from scissors to screw drivers, each piece carries an element that'll make your grin. "Our designs and products are inspired by urban India, and what it stands for today. The designs on display showcase all the things that have influenced us for so many years," says Thakur.
This is also a great place to pick up some of their products (handbags, diaries storage boxes). "It's contemporary, affordable art that can be yours for a lot lesser than regular artwork."
