While the thin plot line and poor dialogues play spoilers, Evil Within 2 is still guaranteed to spook you out

Town of horrors: Evil Within 2 is guaranteed to spook you out

The evil Within 2 throws our protagonist Sebastian Castellanos back into the mind melding world created by the STEM system. This time it isn't a hospital, instead it's a small town called Union. Why would anyone go back into a claustrophobic world with monsters, you ask? Sebastian has a good reason -- his daughter Lily, whom he presumed was dead, is actually alive and is the core of the Mobius' latest version of the Matrix.

Like the first game, this one sticks to its survival horror genre and by the end of it, you will feel older and wearier. The dimly-lit hallways, the sudden sounds and the creepy monsters, all play very well together to give you a sense of dread. It also doesn't help that ammo and resources are minimum and you have to go scavenging for everything from Ammo parts to green gel.

The game has also gone for a more 'open world' feel this time -- the landscape is full of houses and trees, but not all structures can be entered. However, the houses, which you can foray into, offer a nice variety of side quests that can earn you much-needed gear and supplies.

The game also pushes the envelope where gore and stomach-churning scenes are concerned. In the first few minutes of entering the STEM system, you encounter a murdered man, who seems to keep reliving the moment the bullet hits his head as his blood explodes everywhere. In another scene, you are in Union and the first house you enter has a woman feeding what seems like rotting flesh to another person. You have been warned that it is high in detail.

The horror element, however, is a little off -- it is scary at times and the environment perpetuates the tension. There are a lot of miss opportunities for jump scares, which we felt could have pushed the horror genre a little further. That said, environmentally, it is still very much there. Unfortunately, what really brings the game down are the dialogues and the story. Not only does it seem like it was written by an intern, it is out of place and takes away from the overall experience. The story also needs some work; for most of the first part of the game, you are chasing or maybe avoiding this mysterious person, who can basically murder people and freeze the moment, playing out like a grotesque Instagram Boomerang.

The second part is all about Lily and it's plays out much better.

For a game that is a rehashed previous version of the game, The Evil Within 2, does enough to be enjoyable despite its flaws. If you are craving a 20-hour plus horror experience, this game will not disappoint, though you might have to ignore what the characters are saying to enjoy it.
