With the festive season approaching its business end, the month of September was one to rejoice, even for car manufacturers in the country as the industry registered a significant 21 per cent growth in the month gone by.

There are no surprises at the top of the table, as India’s number one carmaker, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. continued to dominate the market with an astounding 1,37,321 units sold in the domestic market last month, at a YoY growth of almost 30 per cent.

Korean carmaker Hyundai Motors retained its second place despite a single digit growth of a shade above five per cent. It sold a total of 42,600 units in September.

Elsewhere, Renault’s triple-digit growth has stopped coming across as a shock after its success story in the past 18 months or so. On the back of its popular hatchback – the Kwid, the French manufacturer sold 12,300 units at a near six-fold growth.

The Kwid’s CMFA cousin, the Datsun redi-GO entry-level car also propelled the sales of Renault’s Japanese partner, Nissan, to 5,151 units last month as it also registered almost a hundred per cent worth of profits last month.

Other domestic carmakers, like Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra, remained steady in September with single digit growths that are set to rise even further around Diwali. Volkswagen and Ford India were also in the green, while Honda India Cars and General Motors remain the only top manufacturers in negative.
