Started in 2008, this will be their first big performance without the adults from the senior choir,” shares Alfred D’Souza, the conductor. With 26 children, from five to 15 years of age, the choir has been practising hard since January to prepare for this concert. It will perform a variety of music, from Classical to Broadway. “We have weekly Sunday lessons, for about an hour and a half. During these lessons, we teach them every thing, including pronunciation and basic breathing techniques. We get them to do jaw exercises, tongue exercises; we have reading sessions in which they are taught to read the words aloud, as well as songs in other languages like German, to ensure correct pronunciation. As the performances also include the children doing a little movement in sync with singing, we teach them steps and practise timing,” he adds.
For D’Souza, the main challenges lay in coordinating the group. Due to the huge age differences, it was difficult to teach them synchronisity. The veteran conductor recalls how mothers of these children helped with stitching costumes, and assisting with practice.
