A five-year-old male dog was mercilessly beaten to death on Wednesday by locals in Mumbai's Chandivali. After the alleged incident, the animal rights activists lodged an FIR at Sakinaka police station.

Speaking to Times of India, animal activist Shruti Rai said, "I had come to know about the extreme animal cruelty through an Animal Feeders WhatsApp group where a video was uploaded of a young man hitting a dark brown coloured dog while an elderly woman was also seen standing close by. I rushed to Sangharsh Nagar Building Number 32, where the dog was lying with serious injuries."

Rai immediately rushed to the animal's rescue and arranged an ambulance to take the injured dog to BSPCA animal hospital in Parel. However, the dog succumbed to his injuries before he could be admitted to the hospital.

The Sakinaka police registered an FIR under IPC sections 429 and 34 against an unnamed man and a woman who were seen in the viral video submitted by the animal rights activists. The cops also applied the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 in this case.

"Just a few days ago, I had intervened to help citizens lodge FIR against four persons in Versova for killing a dog. Now, another dog cruelty has happened in Chandivali. A lot more public awareness has to be raised that it is illegal to harm or kill animals," assistant commissioner of police (anti-corruption bureau) Sudhir Kudalkar said.
