They say a father should always have his son’s back, and this father-son duo from Kalyan took the adage quite literally. The Thane Police Crime Branch has arrested a 62-year-old man who would ride pillion and snatch chains, while his 38-year-old son drove the bike expertly in and out of traffic.

The duo, Asif Shabbir Sayed and his son Bagar, were arrested earlier this month by the Unit V of the Thane Crime Branch. Officials said that they are behind at least 12 cases of chain snatching and two instances of motorcycle theft that were currently under investigation—which have been solved with their arrest—and also have a lengthy past record.

“Gold ornaments and a motorcycle collectively worth Rs 5.40 lakh have been seized from the accused. We had received a tip off about their whereabouts and arrested them after laying a trap,” said senior police inspector Vikas Ghodke, Unit V.
