The assailant showed up at the home of Anusaya Dhyani (72) claiming to be delivering a package. The woman had the chain-lock in place and the assailant convinced her to open the door to sign for the package. When Dhyani fell for the ruse, the man grabbed her by the neck and stabbed her in the abdomen.
She screamed for help and a neighbour rushed to the scene prompting the assailant to flee from the spot. Dhyani was rushed to Rajawadi hospital and later shifted to a private hospital. She is stated to be out of danger. Dhyani has five children, four of whom live outside the state, while daughter Lata lives with her at the three-storey Manu Cooperative Housing Society building at Chembur (East). Lata works with a private firm and had left for work early in the morning.
According to Senior PI Ramesh Gavit of the Tilak Nagar police station, the attacker seemed to be in his 20s.
“The woman was saved in the nick of time. She is currently out of danger. The building has no CCTV camera. We are taking statements of other residents of the building. We have registered an attempt-to-murder case against an unknown person. As of now, we suspect robbery to be the motive. Once the woman recovers, we will prepare a sketch of the accused,” Gavit said. The building only has one elderly watchman. u00a0
