Delhi polls: Sanjay Raut slams BJP for pre-election projects, stands by Kejriwal

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, supported AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal, stating that the BJP's practice of launching projects just before elections is a "habitual tactic," reported news agency ANI. Raut expressed confidence that the people of Delhi would stay loyal to Arvind Kejriwal, suggesting that the BJP's last-minute attempts would not influence the public's stance. "It is their (BJP's) habit. They launch such projects worth thousands of crores before the elections. It was done in Maharashtra as well. They do not do anything for 5 years and before the announcement of the election date, they want to do everything. They again go silent for the next 5 years. The people of Delhi are with Kejriwal," Raut said. Earlier today, PM Modi inaugurated a 13 km stretch of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor connecting Sahibabad to New Ashok Nagar, and also addressed a rally in Delhi's Rohini. PM Modi criticised the AAP government, claiming it lacks a vision for Delhi's development, and emphasized that the BJP-led Centre is spearheading modernization efforts in the capital. He expressed confidence that the BJP will win the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. "The AAP government which has no vision for Delhi and does not care for Delhi cannot develop Delhi. Whatever work is being done to modernise Delhi is being done by the BJP government at the Centre. I am confident that the lotus will bloom in Delhi Assembly too," he said. PM Modi criticised AAP, accusing them of falsely claiming that the Central government obstructed their work and withheld funds, labeling them as "big liars." The Prime Minister referred to the 'Sheeshmahal' as an example, citing a report from a prominent newspaper that exposed excessive spending on the Delhi CM's residence, as detailed in the CAG report. "Those who brought AAP to power in Delhi falsely allege that the Central government does not allow them to work... the Central government does not give them money... how big liars they are... an example of this is their Sheeshmahal. Today itself a leading newspaper has revealed the expenditure incurred on the Sheesh Mahal based on the CAG report," he said. PM Modi criticised the AAP government in Delhi, accusing them of focusing on building their "Sheesh Mahal" while Delhi's residents struggled to access oxygen and medicines during the COVID-19 pandemic. "When the people of Delhi were struggling with Corona when the people of Delhi were wandering for oxygen and medicines, then the entire focus of these people was on building their Sheesh Mahal. They made a huge budget for Sheesh Mahal. This is their truth... they do not care about the people of Delhi. That is why today every Delhiite is saying... we will not tolerate AAP-Da, we will change," he said. (With inputs from ANI)

A private bus carrying passengers was gutted in a fire in Pimpri Chichwad city in Pune district on Sunday, police said. According to news agency PTI, the incident occurred early on Sunday at Jagtap Dairy Chowk. According to Nangal-Rajawatan DSP Charul Gupta, the bus, carrying devotees travelling from Ujjain to Delhi, was involved in the accident near Lahdi Ka Bas on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. The dense fog, which has been affecting traffic across the area, was identified as a key factor contributing to the collision. The bus rammed into two trucks that had earlier crashed, causing significant damage to its front. Gupta reported that around 45 passengers were injured in the accident, with more than 20 individuals being admitted to Dausa District Hospital. Of those, four passengers were transferred to Jaipur for further treatment, while some of the injured continued their journeys to Noida and Delhi for medical attention. NCP objects to BJP MLA’s criticism of Ajit Pawar over Beed sarpanch murder probe

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) spokesperson Suraj Chavan has expressed his disapproval of BJP MLA Suresh Dhas’s comments targeting Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar concerning the ongoing investigation into the murder of a sarpanch in Beed district. In a post on X, Chavan questioned whether Dhas had no trust in the state’s home department to conduct a fair and impartial probe into the case. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, a BJP leader, currently holds the home department portfolio. Chavan’s remarks came after Dhas raised concerns about the investigation’s progress during a protest in Parbhani on Saturday, accusing Pawar of not keeping his promises regarding the case. Chavan further asserted that if any member of the NCP were found to be involved in the murder, Pawar would take swift and decisive action. The NCP leader also asked Chief Minister Fadnavis to advise Dhas to avoid creating any rift in the Mahayuti alliance, warning that any attempts to defame Ajit Pawar would be met with an appropriate response. The controversy stems from the brutal murder of Santosh Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog village in Beed district, who was abducted, tortured, and killed on December 9. According to reports, the murder was linked to Deshmukh’s efforts to prevent an extortion attempt targeting an energy firm operating a windmill project. In connection with the extortion case, Walmik Karad, an associate of Maharashtra Minister Dhananjay Munde, has already been arrested. Seven individuals have been taken into custody in relation to the murder, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) from the Crime Investigation Department (CID) has been assigned to handle the investigation. On Saturday, Dhas accused NCP leaders, including Dhananjay Munde, of being complicit in the murder, claiming that the true culprits behind the crime were still free while two men arrested from Pune in connection with the case were merely “pawns.” This has added fuel to a growing political blame game, with both the NCP and BJP pointing fingers at each other. The case has also gained a caste-related dimension, as Deshmukh was a Maratha, while many of the accused belong to the Vanjari community, a dominant group in the Beed region. (With inputs from PTI)

Activist alleges ministers are targeting her over the Beed sarpanch case

Anti-corruption activist Anjali Damania on Sunday said that the ongoing investigation into the Beed sarpanch murder was "hogwash" and claimed that police from outside that district must lead the inquiry in order for the truth to be revealed, PTI reported. Last year, Massajog sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh was murdered on December 9 for attempting to stop an extortion bid on an energy firm operating a windmill project in the area. The Special Investigation Team of the state's CID is currently probing the murder as well as the extortion case linked to his death, PTI reported. As per PTI, Damania alleged that the Beed police, which bows down to Walmik Karad, the main accused in the extortion case and a close aide of NCP leader and Parli MLA Dhananjya Munde, cannot conduct a fair and impartial inquiry. She also told PTI reporters that she was being targeted by Maharashtra ministers Dhananjay Munde and Pankaja Munde, both from Beed, using "abusive and vulgar language" in messages and phone calls. "I am accused of creating social disharmony by targeting the Vanjari community. I have not done anything like that. I just mentioned that since the times of (late BJP stalwart) Gopinath Munde, all government appointees in Beed are from one community. Police in the district who belong to a particular community bond with Karad and cannot probe him," she claimed. "The ongoing probe is a hogwash. Beed police must not be in charge of the probe. I have met Director General of Police Rashmi Shukla in this regard. I also urge Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis (who holds the home portfolio) to take action against those troubling me," Damania added. Seven individuals have been arrested in the Deshmukh murder case, while one person is absconding. Three persons, including Karad, have been held in the extortion case linked to the sarpanch's murder, PTI reported. VHP calls Nanded blast acquittal a "tight slap" to Congress

The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has condemned the acquittal of the nine surviving accused in the 2006 Nanded blast case, describing the verdict as a "tight slap" on the face of the Congress party. The VHP also demanded an apology from the party’s top leadership to Hindu society, following the court’s decision. The session court in Maharashtra’s Nanded acquitted all nine accused on Saturday, ending a long-running trial that has sparked political controversy. The case, which had remained under investigation for nearly two decades, involved an explosion at the home of Laxman Rajkondwar, allegedly an RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) worker, on April 4-5, 2006. The blast killed his son Naresh Rajkondwar and VHP activist Himanshu Panse, who were reportedly assembling an explosive device at the time. In a statement, VHP national spokesperson Vinod Bansal remarked that the acquittal has exposed the Congress party's efforts to label Hindus as terrorists. He pointed out that the investigation was initially handled by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) before being transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Bansal further claimed that the Congress and Maharashtra ATS had already been discredited in relation to the Malegaon blast case, and now the Nanded case has further revealed their "anti-Hindu misdeeds." “The Congress’ attempt to tarnish the reputation of Hindus through the 2006 Nanded blast case has been thoroughly debunked with this acquittal," Bansal said. "This is a significant defeat for the Congress, and at least now, the party’s leadership should apologise to the Hindu community." The 2006 Nanded blast case has been under investigation for years, with 49 prosecution witnesses examined during the trial. Defence lawyer Nitin Runwal explained that the prosecution failed to present convincing evidence that the incident was a bomb blast, as the defence argued it could have been the result of a gas cylinder explosion or some other inflammable object. At the time of the incident, both the Congress-led central government and the Maharashtra government were in power. The acquittal of the accused follows years of legal proceedings that have cast a long shadow on the case. The Congress party has yet to respond to the VHP's demands for an apology. Dubai-bound AI flight delayed 8 hours, passengers endure 3 hours onboard

Passengers of Air India flight AI909, scheduled to depart for Dubai at 9 am on Saturday, endured an ordeal lasting over eight hours at Mumbai airport. Passengers were made to sit inside the aircraft for nearly three hours without air conditioning, before being deboarded. A passenger on this flight also fainted due to lack of amenities like water. Shweta Powar, an entrepreneur travelling to Dubai on the flight, told mid-day, “Many of us reached the airport around 5 am as it was an international flight. Many passengers had not even eaten breakfast. Boarding started around 8.15 am and abruptly halted around 8.30 am. The crew told us that there was some technical glitch and boarding resumed in 10 minutes. We were all inside the aircraft around 8.45 am, but the aircraft did not depart. We were made to sit inside the aircraft till 11.40 am.” The flyer further narrated, “The lack of a functioning air conditioning system caused several passengers to feel unwell. Some complained of dizziness and nausea. We requested the airline crew for updates but they did not have anything to tell us. They served us some food inside the aircraft.” Passengers said that the captain announced around 11 am that there was a technical issue with the aircraft and that the ground crew had fixed it. But the flight never took off. Around 11.45 am, they were deboarded “There were diabetic and elderly people travelling with us. Some of us will miss our connecting flights. After deboarding, we were asked to proceed to a transit lounge. No water was served to us while in this phase. A passenger who had undergone a surgery recently fainted,” Powar said. Another passenger, Nishtha Chadha, said, “The pilots told us there was a technical issue. But that does not mean that we should be made to sit in the aircraft for three hours without AC.” Eventually, boarding resumed at 3.45 pm and the flight took off at 5.10 pm. Air India did not respond to requests for comment.  Indigo flyers stuck in aircraft for six hrs Passengers of IndiGo flight 6E6114 from Delhi to Mumbai were allegedly forcibly held onboard inside the aircraft for over six hours before departure due to dense fog in Delhi. The flight, scheduled for departure at 10 pm on January 3, finally took off at 3.40 am on January 4 after significant delays attributed to adverse weather. Indigo acknowledged the query sent by mid-day but did not comment till the time of going to press. An IndiGo spokesperson said: "Flight 6E 6114, operating from Delhi to Mumbai, was delayed due to fog and low visibility at Delhi. The extended delay occurred as weather conditions remained unsuitable for operations. The aircraft departed promptly once conditions improved. We regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers due to factors beyond our control. At IndiGo, passenger and crew safety remains our utmost priority, and we sincerely appreciate the understanding and patience of our passengers in such circumstances."

Mask up to combat HMPV: Experts urge caution amid rising cases in China

Be alert, no need to panic,” is how the health experts in India are reacting to the recent outbreak of HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus,) a virus that causes upper respiratory infections, similar to a cold. It’s a seasonal disease that usually occurs in the winter and early spring. However, experts have cautioned that the public need to adhere to COVID-19-appropriate behaviour of wearing masks in crowded areas, and sanitising hands. This is especially important as many Indians settled in China usually travel back home for the month-long Chinese New Year holidays starting from January 15.  Dr Wiqar Shaikh, a former Professor of Medicine at Grant Medical College, and a well-known allergy and asthma specialist, has been closely monitoring the surge in upper and lower respiratory diseases in China caused by the HMPV virus since last few days and has since raised concern. Dr Wiqar Shaikh and Dr Subhash Hira Dr Shaikh said, “HMPV cases were first reported from Henan province in Northern China, and it is spreading rapidly.” He added that HMPV mostly affects children and the elderly and is already overwhelming hospitals in China. Dr Shaikh said HMPV was discovered in 2001 and belongs to the “pneumoviridae” family. He added that the test to confirm HMPV in the laboratory is the reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), which can also quantify viral load. He explained that the symptoms of HMPV and Covid-19 are similar—it spreads primarily through droplets and direct contact. However, there is as yet no specific vaccine or medication for HMPV and treatment is mainly symptomatic. China is also facing a surge in other viruses including Influenza-A, Mycoplasma pneumoniae and COVID-19. It is reported that children’s hospitals in China are flooded with increasing cases of pneumonia. Dr Shaikh explained that symptoms of HMPV include fever, cold, cough, sore throat and breathlessness and could lead to bronchitis and pneumonia. He said that although no cases of HMPV have as yet been reported from India, our country needs to be careful, especially since China is a neighbouring country. He concluded that our best friend is the “mask” and cautioned that the authorities must screen all flyers arriving from China. “The World Health Organization (WHO) in future will use the term Disease X for such potential threats of any currently unknown pathogen that could cause a pandemic. HMPV does not yet fit the criteria of being declared Disease X but it has pandemic potential under certain circumstances. Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a significant cause of respiratory illness, and death in 10-80 per cent of infected persons in some published studies. Epidemics of HMPV are likely to occur, particularly during the respiratory virus season, which usually peaks in the fall and winter months. The patterns of HMPV outbreaks can vary by region, and factors such as climate, population density, and public health preventive measures influence the spread of the virus. HMPV can be complicated by the presence of other respiratory viruses, such as influenza A and Corona viruses, further complicating diagnosis and public health response,” said Dr Subhash Hira, professor of global health at University of Washington-USA and former advisor of WHO-TDR Geneva, who continues to be on the pandemic preparedness committee. “Influenza A is a well-known virus responsible for seasonal flu outbreaks and can also cause pandemics. While it is a significant public health concern, it is not classified as ‘Disease X’ since it is already understood, characterized, and studied extensively. Surveillance efforts are essential to understand the epidemiological trends and the potential impact of respiratory viruses on public health,” added Dr Hira. Symptoms of HMPV, so far, have not been severe and generally cause mild illness—like fever, cold and cough, runny nose etc. Preventive COVID-19 appropriate behaviour like frequent handwashing, wearing masks, avoiding crowded or poorly ventilated spaces can be advisable to keep the spread under control, Dr Shaikh has advised.

Mumbai weather update: Cloudy skies linger as air quality stays moderate

Mumbai, the financial hub of India, is set to experience cloudy skies throughout Sunday, January 5, 2025, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The day began with a sunrise at 7:13 am and will conclude with a sunset at 6:15 pm. The air quality remains at a moderate level, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 152, raising health concerns for vulnerable groups. The city’s temperatures are expected to range between a minimum of 22°C and a maximum of 29°C. These conditions, coupled with the moderate AQI, suggest limited outdoor activity for children, senior citizens, and individuals with respiratory issues like asthma. Experts advise wearing masks outdoors and taking precautions against air pollution. Why does AQI worsen in winter? Winter brings calm and slow-moving winds, reducing the dispersion of pollutants. As a result, contaminants remain trapped near the ground, leading to higher AQI levels. Additionally, the use of biomass for heating purposes during colder months contributes significantly to air pollution, further worsening the air quality. Weather forecast for January 6 Looking ahead, Mumbai is expected to witness another cloudy day on Monday, January 6, 2025. The sunrise will occur at 7:13 am, with sunset scheduled for 6:15 pm. Temperatures are predicted to vary between 21°C and 30°C, accompanied by 46% humidity and steady winds blowing from the north at a speed of 21 km/h. Unusual weather patterns in Mumbai Recent weather patterns in the city have been atypical. On Friday, January 3, 2025, Mumbai experienced a dramatic temperature difference of nearly 20°C between day and night – a rare phenomenon for this time of year. The daytime temperature soared to 36°C, marking the highest January temperature in the city since 2016, when it reached 37.3°C on January 1. This was the first instance in nine years where January temperatures hit such highs. Residents are urged to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure their health and well-being amidst the fluctuating weather and air quality conditions.
